Explained

Measured survey or topographical survey: which do you need?

By the Section Scale team · Published 7 November 2026

The difference

A measured building survey records the building itself: floor plans, elevations, sections and roof plans.

A topographical survey records the land: levels, boundaries, trees, drainage covers and other visible features, tied to Ordnance Datum.

When you need a measured building survey

  • Extensions, loft conversions and basements
  • Refurbishments and changes of use
  • Floor area checks for sales and lettings

When you need a topographical survey

  • New buildings and site layouts
  • Planning applications that show levels and boundaries
  • Landscaping, drainage and groundworks

When you need both

Any project that changes both the building and the ground around it, such as a large rear extension on a sloping garden. Both surveys can be done in the same visit, which saves time and cost.
